What a 2-Hour Journey Connects: Passion for Clarinet Lessons
2026—a new year has begun. Thank you for your continued support.
Recently, watching a student travel two hours by train for clarinet lessons brought back my memory. Their earnest dedication to professional clarinet instruction overlapped with my own past.
High School Memories: My Clarinet Lesson Journey
Senior year, when I finally decided to pursue music for university entrance exams, I began lessons with Professor Yukio Ohashi. From Funabashi City, Chiba to Sensei's home in Sangenjaya—multiple train transfers plus walking: two hours each way. I made the same journey my current student does.
I vividly remember my first visit. Completely lost in the quiet residential neighborhood, crying as I walked, convinced I'd "never get there." No cell phones then—I desperately searched for a payphone to call for help.
Professional Clarinet Instruction: Time in the Lesson Room
Finally arriving and ringing the buzzer. The door unlocks. Remove shoes at the entrance, head to the lesson room. The previous student is still in session, so I sit quietly preparing my instrument and wait. Then the two-hour journey home, feeling tension and exhaustion from the lesson.
That mix of nervousness and anticipation returns to me with such nostalgia.
The time and effort invested in learning music is never wasted. I want to deliver the best lessons to students who make that same commitment now. That's how I begin 2026.
